The difference between DTF and Sublimation: what to choose?
Share
When it comes to textile and gift customization, two techniques stand out: DTF (Direct to Film) and sublimation . Both allow you to create high-quality personalized products, but they have different characteristics—and choosing the right one depends on your needs.
In this article, we simply explain the differences between DTF and sublimation , and help you decide which is best for your project.
🔍 What is DTF?
DTF (Direct to Film) is a digital printing technique where the design is printed on a special film and then transferred to the fabric with heat and pressure.
✅ Can be applied to cotton, polyester or mixed fabrics
✅ Accepts any fabric color (including black)
✅ Print with excellent definition and durability
✅ Ideal for t-shirts, sweatshirts, bags, caps, etc.
✅ Perfect for designs with lots of detail and vibrant colors
🔍 What is Sublimation?
Sublimation is a process where the ink turns into a gas and penetrates the surface of the product, becoming part of the material.
✅ Very sharp and colorful results
✅ Only works on light synthetic fabrics (e.g. white polyester)
✅ Widely used for mugs, cushions, pillow covers, plates, etc.
⚠️ Does not work well on cotton or dark fabrics
⚠️ No relief — the print “melts” into the material
🆚 Quick comparison
| Feature | DTF | Sublimation |
|---|---|---|
| Types of fabric | Cotton, polyester and blends | Light polyester only |
| Background colors | Any color, even black | White/light background only |
| Product types | Various textiles | Synthetic textiles, ceramics |
| Durability | Very high | Very high (in the right materials) |
| Versatility | High | Average |
What technique do we use at Newstarz?
➡️ For textiles (T-shirts, sweatshirts, bags, etc.) we use DTF printing for its durability, versatility and adaptation to various types of fabric and color.
➡️ For mugs and some rigid gifts , we use sublimation , which allows images with excellent quality and resistance to washing.
🎯 The technique depends on the product — and we always choose the best one to ensure final quality.
Conclusion
Both techniques have their value, but they serve different purposes . DTF is ideal for clothing and various fabrics, while sublimation is perfect for rigid gifts or light synthetic textiles.
At Newstarz , we help you choose the best option for your project.
